Vespar (buspirone hydrochloride - BH) belongs to a general class of drugs called antianxiety agents and is not chemically or pharmacologically related to the benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or other sedative/anxiolytic drugs.

Vespar is indicated for the management of anxiety disorders or the short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety. Some anxiety symptoms: motor tension; shakiness, trembling, tension, muscle aches, fatigability, inability to relax, eyelid twitch, restlessness, autonomic hyperactivity; sweating, heart pounding or racing, cold, clammy hands, dry mouth, dizziness, upset stomach. Anxiety or tension associated with the stress of everyday life usually does not require treatment with an anxiolytic. The action of buspirone hydrochloride is not known, but it affects the many neurotransmitters in the brain that bring about the feeling of anxiety.

This medicine contains the active ingredient buspirone hydrochloride, which is a type of medicine called an anxiolytic. The way in which buspirone works is not fully understood. It appears to act by modifying the release of a mixture of neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are stored in nerve cells and are involved in transmitting messages between the nerve cells. Buspirone is thought to enhance the activity of the neurotransmitters dopamine and noradrenaline, and to reduce the activity of the neurotransmitters serotonin and acetylcholine in the brain. The overall effect is to relieve feelings of anxiety.

Vespar differs from other anxiolytics in that it does not possess anticonvulsant or muscle relaxant properties, does not impair psychomotor function, and does not cause sedation or physical dependence. Buspirone hydrochloride is used to treat generalized anxiety disorder and anxiety caused by alcohol craving or smoking cessation, as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children. The re-ported side effects were very mild, and many clinical tri-als have shown the superiority of Buspirone hydrochloride over other tradi-tional stimulant-based treatments.

Buspirone hydrochloride tablets are taken by mouth the same time each day. There is no evidence that Vespar is addictive.
