Cytomel T-4 (levothyroxine) dosage for hypothyroidism

Cytomel T-4 (Levothyroxine) is a replacement for a hormone that is normally produced by your thyroid gland to regulate the body's energy and metabolism. Levothyroxine is given when the thyroid does not produce enough of this hormone on its own.

Cytomel T-4 treats hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). Levothyroxine is also used to treat or prevent goiter (enlarged thyroid gland), which can be caused by hormone imbalances, radiation treatment, surgery, or cancer.

Cytomel T-4 is administered as a single daily dose, preferably one-half to one-hour before breakfast. Cytomel T-4 should be taken at least 4 hours apart from drugs that are known to interfere with its absorption. Due to the long half-life of levothyroxine, the peak therapeutic effect at a given dose of levothyroxine sodium may not be attained for 4-6 weeks.

Dose for Hypothyroidism in adults and in children in whom growth and puberty are complete:

The average full replacement dose of levothyroxine sodium is approximately 1.7 mcg/kg/day (e.g., 100-125 mcg/dayfor a 70 kg adult). Older patients may require less than 1 mcg/kg/day. Levothyroxine sodium doses greater than 200 mcg/day are seldom required.
